GoPro Hero 11 Cinematic Footage (10-Bit Color)

GoPro Hero 11 Cinematic Short Film – Filmed In 5.3K (10-Bit Color)

This short film was filmed on a sunny October day in the New Forest. The film demonstrates GoPro Hero 11 cinematic footage recorded in 5.3K resolution.

The film documents a 6 mile day hike through heathland, grassland and ancient forest. Forest ponies and cattle grazing by a babbling brook, billowing white clouds fill the blue sky. Bird song fills the air and the wind rustles through the trees.

Cinematic Camera Settings

Below are the settings I used in the recording of this film on the GoPro Hero 11 Black.

  • 5.3k Video Resolution
  • 30 Frames Per Second
  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio
  • Flat Color: 10-Bit
  • Low Sharpness
  • Bit Rate: High
  • Max ISO 800
  • EV -0.5
  • White Balance: 5600k

I set the GoPro to Low sharpness to achieve a more cinematic feel. Remember that medium and high sharpness is artificial and makes footage look more like video as opposed to film.

Another key setting is the exposure value or EV for short. Having the GoPro set to -0.5 in Protune ensures that extra detail is retained in the highlights. This is particularly noticeable in clouds on a bright sunny day.

Color Grading

Comparison between Flat color profile & Graded color

All the footage in the film was shot in 10 bit color. The 10-bit color depth has 1024 shades of each color. This means 1.07 billion shades of color in total.

Compare this to 8-bit with 256 shades of each color and 16 million shades in total.

In practice this means that 10-bit color stands up to grading and color correction far more forgiving. Which in turn gives a more visually pleasing image to the eye.

LumaFusion

I editi most of my action camera footage in LumaFusion including this short film. Color grading for the film was also done in LumaFusion taking advantage of the new video scopes feature.

I’ve written a number of article on LumaFusion and especially editing 5.3K resolution video. Check them out for further information.

Camera Accessories

I kept the accessories used for recording fairly basic. Tracking shots were filmed using the Telesin backpack mount

The Timelapse shot had the Hero 11 mounted onto the Neewer mini tripod. Lastly, the crane / jib shots of the bridge near the end of the film were recorded using the Telesin Ultra Long Selfie Stick.

Watch The Film

Below is a link to the film. You’ll also find the film along with other GoPro videos and footage on my YouTube channel. I hope you enjoy watching as much as I did in the making of this cinematic short.
