How To Update Insta360 X3 Firmware – Problem Solved Using A Computer

I’ve recently added the excellent Insta360 X3 action camera to my own personal action camera collection. Find out how to use a computer to update Insta360 X3 firmware by following my compressive guide below.

You may ask why use a computer? Well the answer is that straight out the box version v1.0.04 wouldn’t update the X3 via the Insta360 official app.

This is unfortunate as you can’t use the X3 until the latest firmware is installed. I did a search online and this problem has affected many new X3 owners. Hopefully this article will help others who are struggling with this update.

Updating The Firmware With A Computer

Follow these 12 basic steps to update your Insta360 X3 camera to the latest firmware version v1.0.04 using a computer. This also applies to future versions if the problem arises again.

This method will work with any computer whether it’s a PC or Apple Mac. The computer must have a USB-A socket of course.

12 Step Update Process

  1. Insert an empty micro SD card into the X3 by opening the battery compartment. Re-insert the battery into the camera.
  2. Power up the Insta360 X3 camera.
  3. Format the micro SD card using the X3 menu option.
  4. Switch off the X3 camera.
  5. Power up your MacBook or personal computer.
  6. Plug in the Insta360 X3 to the USB port of your computer.
  7. Power up the X3 action camera.
  8. Download the latest X3 firmware from the Insta360 website to your computer hard drive. (See link above).
  9. Browse the X3 micro SD card using your computer file management / browser. You’ll find the X3 listed as an “unknown device’.
  10. Drag the downloaded firmware file from the computer hard drive to the micro SD inserted in the Insta360 X3 camera.
  11. Double click the firmware file to unpack the contents onto the SD card.
  12. The X3 camera will now reconginsie the firmware file and start installing the new firmware update.

Completing The Firmware Update

And that’s all there is to updating the firmware on your Insta360 X3 action camera using a computer.

NOTE: While the camera carries out the firmware update, the camera will display a progress bar denoted in percentages.

After the camera has finished updating the software it will automatically power off.

Congratulations, you are now ready to start enjoying your X3 360 action camera to take amazing 360 video footage.
