Telesin Selfie Stick Review – 2.7m Ultra Long Version

Telesin Selfie Stick Review

Being the owner of several 360 cameras I needed an ultra long invisible selfie stick. Read this Telesin selfie stick review to discover whether it has become my most popular ultra long stick for 360 videos and photos.

Specification – 2.7M Selfie Stick

The overall weight of the 2.7 metre Telesin selfie stick is a respectable 300 grams / 10.58 oz. This is down to the 8 extended sections being made of carbon fiber.

For an ultra long selfie stick a closed size of 40 cm is short enough to fit inside a daypack or strap onto the side with some molle straps.

Although the maximum load weight for cameras is 1.5 Kg, in practice that would be far too heavy. Fortunately most action cameras are 500 grams or less.

  • Weight: 300g
  • Maximum camera load weight: 1.5 Kg
  • Recommended camera weight: 500 g
  • Closed Length 40 cm
  • Maximum extended length 270 cm
  • Material: Carbon fiber, aerospace aluminum alloy

Features

1/4 inch thread for mounting the tripod mount adapter

The stick comes supplied with an offset GoPro style tripod mount adapter and thumb screw. The tripod mount screws onto a  ¼ x 20 standard male thread at the top section of the pole.

360 camera users will be looking to upgrade the offset tripod mount to an inline version such as the Joby pin mount. The pin mount ensures the 360 camera stitches  the pole from the image when extended.

Monopod

At the base of the poles hard plastic coated handle is a female ¼ x 20 thread insert which allows you to attach the selfie stick to a tripod or monopod tripod feet.

If you’re considering using the stick as a monopod you will need a counter weight screwed to the base for stability. It’s worth noting you’ll be limited to the amount of extension in this rig to 125 centimeters otherwise the stick may topple over.

Lanyard

A wrist lanyard comes attached to the base of the handle, although the cord has a fairly low breaking strain. For this reason I’d suggest upgrading the lanyard to a higher breaking strength cord.

Extendable Sections

Now onto the all important sections that provide the maximum extension of 2.7 meters. There are 9 sections including the handle. 8 sections made from carbon fiber extend from the handle to provide 6 different lengths (see below for lengths).

  • 40 cm
  • 95 cm
  • 125 cm
  • 180 cm
  • 205 cm
  • 270 cm

Friction Locking Pole Sections

The sections of the stick are held in place by friction. To fix the sections in place you have to twist the poles clockwise / anticlockwise until they lock. In practice this does take a bit of getting used to.

Selfie Stick Performance

Let’s now take a look at how the stick performs when used to take video and photos.

Extending the stick does require patience. You cannot just choose a section randomly and extend it to a desired length. You are limited to the 6 section lengths mentioned above.

Once you are used to the feel of how the stick locks each section by twisting with both hands it becomes more natural in use.

Pole Bending & Flex

The reason I didn’t opt for the 3 meter version is down to the extra length causing more bend. 30 millimeters is nothing when filming in 360 mode. However, it can make a difference to how much the stick bends.

There are a number of techniques to compensate for the bend of the stick at the longer extension lengths.

Practical Uses

Combined with a 360 camera the ultra long selfie stick has many uses as well as taking selfie shots. Below are just some of the video and photo shots you can achive with the Telesin 2.7 meter stick.

I also use the stick to achieve interesting high angle POV shots. An example being up a tree or building using a clamp or shock cord to hold the stick in place.

See how the stick performs with the Insta360 X3 action camera. I share some walking video footage filmed in 360 and reframed in the Insta360 app. The nearest rival to the Telesin stick is the Extended stick from Insta360.
