Selfie Stick Wrist Strap & Lanyard (How To Attach – Guide)

Selfie Stick Wrist Strap & Lanyard

With selfie sticks being used more in the video recording of action sports, a selfie stick wrist strap or lanyard has become an essential accessory.

The 360 camera softwares ability to make the selfie stick invisible while recording fast paced action has opened up a whole new way of filming action sequences.

Skiing and mountain biking action footage in particular have benefited. Being able to have the 360 camera act as a floating drone following all the action is some of the most dynamic action camera footage you’ll see today.

Of course, holding a selfie stick in your hand while skiing down a mountain increases the chance of dropping the camera and stick itself.

In some cases you’ll be able to retrieve your expensive camera, sometimes you won’t be so lucky. Hence why it’s important to have a wrist strap or lanyard attached to the stick.

How To Attach Wrist Straps & Lanyards To A Selfie Stick

I use the Insta360 Invisible Selfie Stick as my choice of stick to film with the GoPro Max 360 camera. To a lesser extent I use the Telesin Ultra Long Selfie Stick if I need more extension for more fake drone type video footage.

The Telesin stick does come with a wrist strap attached straight out the box which is reasonably strong but there’s room for improvement with the addition of ancillary strap.

Eyelet Bolt

To start off with, ensure your selfie stick has a standard ¼ x 20 thread insert at the base of the stick. This insert is there mostly for screwing onto a tripod adapter but has a dual purpose of attaching a ¼ x 20 eyelet bolt as well.

With an eyelet bolt attached by screwing into the sticks thread insert. This allows you to loop through a wrist strap or clip a lanyard to the selfie stick.

What To Look For In A Wrist Strap & Lanyard

There are a few features to look out for when choosing a wrist strap and lanyard for your selfie stick.

Material

All modern straps are made of nylon. The nominal breaking strength should be above 4000 pounds. In the case of lanyards it should have a quick release buckle.

My preferred choice is the lanyard when skiing. For safety and to a lesser extent convenience it’s key to have a quick release buckle as part of the nylon strap.

Adjustable Wrist Strap

I’d suggest having the ability to adjust the wrist strap so you can slip it over gloves or a padded ski jacket while filming with your stick.

The clip and lock style adjustment catch is a feature to look out for as it makes adjustment of the length of the wrist strap far easier.

Metal Clip

Having an eyelet bolt screwed into the base of the stick allows you clip a lanyard and remove with ease. I suggest a stainless steel oval detachable clip for this purpose.
